Spanish in the United States

_The need of the Spanish language in the United States has been increasing every year. Recent data confirms that the only languages presently expanding are Spanish and English, and that Hispanics are currently the largest minority group in the USA. With approximately 37 million people, Hispanics represent 13% of the US population. It is believed that the Hispanic population will triple by the year 2050 to 98.2 million. This means that one out of every four Americans will be Hispanic.

_More than a language, Spanish is a culture that is taking a larger part in “American” life. Companies that provide products and services may want to expand their customer base by translating their websites into Spanish. Spanish-speaking people that have easier access to these services and/or products will use them more. Businesses can also become partners with foreign companies whose mother language is Spanish or companies within the United States with Spanish-speaking employees.

_The picture we once had of Spanish-speaking immigrants as uneducated, poor and holding jobs that “no one wants to do” has made a 180 degree turn. There are now significant numbers of qualified professionals and talent coming from Latin American countries. According to investigations by StatMark, about 40% of Colombians immigrated to the United States in 2007 have a degree in higher education and seven out of 10 people speak a correct level of English. Two-thirds of Venezuelan immigrants have completed some college coursework. In general, one out of every three Latin Americans living in the United States holds a college degree.

_Finally, it can be said that the 37 million Hispanics living in the United States constitute, in addition to a huge market power of about 270 million dollars per year, a profound cultural symbol in the United States.
